This infographic has a really appealing aesthetic that I think would breed environmental consciousness in a simple, graphic approach.

These are illustrations I did for a potential awareness campaign for the Tuolumne River. I attempted to stray away from real photographs and instead to incorporate highly graphic elements to appeal to a younger demographic.

Take Back the Tap is an organization sweeping college campuses throughout the United States working towards a collective effort to discourage students from drinking bottled water. By favoring tap water over bottled water, students contribute to environmental sustainability, supporting natural water resources, and reducing waste. SFSU has a chapter ourselves, and found here and they hold seminars and events, particularly during Earth Day. This resource engages students in a broader cause by focusing on small groups and specific communities–college students.

Tuolumne River Technical Advisory Committee

The Tuolumne River TAC is a committee found by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, offering blogs and websites to follow the progress of these committees working on preserving the Tuolumne, but ironically, none of the links work.

Paddle to the Sea is a month-long paddle-a-thon organized by the Tuolumne River Trust in order to celebrate the river through community involvement. Similar to fundraising marathons such as the Susan B. Komen Walk for the Cure, paddlers are able to raft, canoe, or kayak their way down the Tuolumne from the Sierra Nevada to the San Francisco Bay. This encourages communities to connect with the river firsthand, fostering a more personal relationship with the watershed. 

This event would not be feasible to market within the purpose of this study, however, because most San Franciscan students don't often engage in water recreation, or even marathons in general, due to the high cost and the necessity for fundraising.

Tuolumne River Trust

The Tuolumne River Trust is the sole nonprofit organization that works to save the Tuolumne. With three locations in Sonora, Modesto, and San Francisco, the TRT has several different goals all working towards preserving the wellbeing of the river.

Regional Goals
Sierra Nevada: protect untouched tributaries
Central Valley: create more natural flood plain
Bay Area: promote stewardship of the Tuolumne through innovative models of sustainable water use and efficiency

Problem Statement

The Tuolumne River, which provides San Francisco residents with tap water and water recreation, is facing exploitation, and is in need of water stewardship.

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of the this study was to bring awareness of the Tuolumne River to San Francisco State University students, and provide deeper insight into river conservation that will benefit the San Francisco State community.

Introduction to Marina Liu!

My name is Marina Liu, and I'm a fourth year senior at San Francisco State University, spending my very last semester in the Design & Industry department (DAI), as a Visual Communication Major. The degree is B.S. (aka Bachelor of Science)! I'm also minoring in Marketing because I thought it sounded fancy and neat.

I love wit, puns, and clever, deliberate design! I'm committed to ice cream therapy and constantly challenging my creative boundaries. I'm a firm believer in recently disappearing artforms, such as analog photography and print design, and am heavily influenced by music/concert posters, photojournalism, and surrealist illustration.

In the distant future upon graduating college, I hope to work in the industry and gain firsthand experience before possibly pursuing graduate studies.

SF MUNI Fare Evasion

Problem 1:

Many San Francisco MUNI passengers are guilty of fare evasion and cause inefficient bus entrance workflow.

Purpose 1:

The purpose of this study is to research the solutions to prevent fare evasion and therefore maximize efficient workflow within MUNI buses.

Thrift Store Signage

Problem 2:

Although thrift and community stores exist for social welfare and offer cheaper shopping alternatives, product organization can be improved with more effective way-finding and signage.

Purpose 2:

The purpose is to research and develop effective signage throughout thrift stores to maximize the consumer’s shopping experience and improve workflow within the stores.

University Hallway Mobility

Problem 3:

Many San Francisco State University (SFSU) students arrive to their classes early and sit on the floor, blocking passing students and inhibiting workflow throughout hallways.

Purpose 3:

The purpose of this study is to research and develop a solution to minimize student blockage within hallways between classes for easy mobility.
